Bible Study Made For Moms
Friends, I don’t know how many times I find myself laying my head down at night thinking there just wasn’t enough time in the day. Laundry is overflowing, my email box is full, school projects still need to be done, and the dishes have filled up the sink. I know you can relate. We’re all so busy, and yet, I’m going to tell you that you can add personal Bible study to your task list? Absolutely, single mom, and here are four reasons why.
1. Your spiritual growth is important. Making Bible study a priority in your life is not selfish, and it’s worth cutting back on other things to do. Why? Because as you read, you’ll grow, and as you grow spiritually, the Holy Spirit transforms your heart and your mind to be more like Christ Jesus. This fills us with life and hope even in a dark, busy, overwhelming world.
2. The Bible gives us guidance for life. Jeremiah 17:9 boldly tells this truth, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” When we are not filling ourselves up with the word of God, we quickly become tempted to make decisions based off our feelings. You’ll still encounter times where you have to make a decision that might not be clearly laid out for you, but with a mind that is already saturated in Scripture, it will be easier to see what the best possible solutions are.
3. You really can understand the Bible and study it. If you are a believer, the Holy Spirit resides in you and will help make Scripture clear to you. Start by finding a Bible in a version that is both accurate and easy for you to understand. We love the Christian Standard Bible, New Living Translation Bible or the English Standard Bible. We also recommend a Bible with good commentary, which helps explain the verse or concept when something seems confusing. A great example of this is the ESV Women’s Study Bible.
4. All it takes is 10 minutes. Some people get stuck because they think in order to do Bible study right they have to devote hours a day to it. Nope! Start small. Carve out 10 minutes to open up God’s word and jot down a few thoughts. A great place to start is the book of John. Start at the beginning and read a few verses a day. The SOAP method is a great way to start (and a great thing to teach your kids too!).
S—Scripture. Write the scripture out.
O—Observation. What is happening in this verse? What is it saying?
A—Application. How can this be applied to my life today?
P—Prayer. Respond to the passage in prayer. Ask God to help you apply this verse to your life.
Have more then 10 minutes? Great! Use it! The more time you have, the more you can soak in.
Bible study is so important, mama. It will change your life and your outlook on the day ahead of you. Will every day be some big revelation? No. But each day will build on the others, and you’ll grow stronger and stronger.
